How do I check if my Georgia driver’s license is suspended?

I often get the question of whether a person has a driver’s license that is suspended.  A client may have missed court and has a Failure to Appear or might be uncertain about whether they have satisfied all requirements to get a license back while already serving a suspension.  This query is easily explored by calling the Georgia Department of Driver Services (DDS) at (404) 657-9300.  You can call this DDS Contact Center and follow the prompts.  You will need your driver’s license number to provide to the automated service to easily learn whether your Georgia license is valid or invalid.

Alternatively, you can visit DDS Online Services  and provide your driver’s license number on the website as well.

If you have a question on whether your license is valid it is important to look into this question because most law enforcement agencies in Georgia have the policy to arrest individuals when Driving on a Suspended License pursuant to O.C.G.A. 40-5-121.  Further, if suspended you can start taking active steps to correct the suspension(s).

Do I have a right to record restriction?

I receive calls all the time from current and prospective clients asking if they have a right to restriction of a criminal record.  A person suffers the indignity of having a criminal charge- sometimes wrongly- and wants to know how to get their information- photo/charge/arrest date- off the Georgia Gazette or have their case information sealed and restricted pursuant to O.C.G.A. 35-3-37 with the respective Clerk of Court and with the Georgia Crime Information Center (GCIC).    O.C.G.A. 35-3-37 lays out the guidelines for having a criminal record restricted.  I work with clients all the time to gauge whether restriction is warranted- and then if warranted I help the client make the record restricted from the public view.  This is an important statutory privilege afforded certain individuals charged with crime(s) and should be considered in every case on whether the privilege applies.
